Frequently Asked Questions about BARK's plan

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is BARK?
BARK, short for Beaches ARe for K9s Too, Inc. is a
registered Florida non-profit corporation and a registered
Political Action Committee (PAC) in Palm Beach County.

What is BARK attempting?
BARK is attempting to amend the current Palm Beach County
ordinance (Sec.4-34) that prohibits dogs on county beaches
to establish several designated dog friendly beaches.

How is BARK able to do this?
By utilizing the Citizen’s Initiative Procedure in the Palm
Beach County Charter, which gives citizens the right to
create, amend or repeal county ordinances.

Which beaches would become dog friendly?
The county will have to designate which beaches allow dogs
once the initiative passes.

What if I don’t want to be around dogs when I am on the
beach?
BARK is not attempting to open up every beach to dogs.
There will still be plenty of beaches available where dogs will
not be allowed.

Isn’t it dangerous to allow dogs on the beach?
Absolutely not.
The City of Jupiter has allowed dogs on a
section of their beach for many years without any serious
incidents.  There is no reason to think that a few more dog
beaches in Palm Beach County can’t be as safe and
successful.

Couldn’t a person be bit by a dog on the beach?
A person could be bit by a dog anywhere.  It’s a moot point,
since banning dogs from beaches will not prevent dog bites in
Palm Beach County.

Couldn’t a big dog attack / injure a little dog?
Again, this type of incident can happen anywhere.  Again,
banning dogs from the beach will not prevent it this type of
incident from occurring in Palm Beach County.

Won’t dogs spread parasites on the beach?
All dogs permitted on the designated dog friendly beaches
must be parasite free and be de-wormed on a monthly basis
(typically by using a monthly Heartworm preventative such as
Heartgard Plus or Interceptor).  In addition dog owners are
required to clean up after their pet or face fines and/or loss of
beach privileges.

Can any dog go to the beach?
No, BARK’s plan would create a “dog beach” tag.  Only dogs
with this tag would be allowed on the designated dog
beaches.  Dangerous dogs (as classified by AC&C) and
aggressive dogs likely to harm people or other dogs would be
prohibited from the beach.

How much will the tag cost?
That would be decided after the initiative passes.  The cost of
the tag must be reasonable.

Who will supervise the dog beaches and enforce the
pick-up law?
Enforcement and monitoring will be provided by AC&C funded
through the beach tag sales.
